The SLAP Lab at College of Charleston

Welcome to the SLAP Lab

At the Second Language Acquisition and Processing (SLAP) Lab, we investigate how (second) languages are processed, with a focus on word structure and morphosyntactic properties. Our research explores how cognitive variables, especially inhibitory control, verbal working memory, and visuospatial working memory, affect the computation of word structure within and across words.

We employ a variety of behavioral and electrophysiological techniques, including eyetracking, self-paced reading, lexical decision tasks, and anodal and cathodal transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS), to understand the mechanisms underlying language processing.

The SLAP Lab was founded by Dr. Ezequiel Durand-López, Assistant Professor of Hispanic Linguistics at the College of Charleston. Dr. Durand-López directs multiple projects in collaboration with undergraduate and graduate students, providing hands-on research experience in psycholinguistics and second language acquisition.
